Period–luminosity–color–radius relationships of Cepheids as a function of metallicity: evolutionary effects

چکیده
Based on consistent evolutionary and pulsation calculations, we analyse the effect of metallicity and of different convection treatments in the stellar models on period– magnitude, –color and –radius relationships. In order to perform an accurate comparison with observations, we have computed grids of atmosphere models and synthetic spectra for different metallicities, covering the range of effective temperatures and gravities relevant for Cepheids. The models are compared to recent observations of galactic and Magellanic Clouds Cepheids. Unprecedented level of agreement is found between models and observations. We show that within the range of metallicity for the Galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds, a change of slope in the period– luminosity (PL) relationship is predicted at low periods, due to the reduction of the blue loop during core He burning. The minimum mass undergoing a blue loop and consequently the critical period at which this change of slope occurs depend on the metallicity Z and on the convection treatment in the stellar models. However, besides this change of slope, we do not find any significant effect of metallicity on period–magnitude relationships from V to K bands, and on period–color relationships in IR colors. We only find a detectable effect of Z on (B − V ) colors. These results are not affected by uncertainties inherent in current stellar models, mainly due to convection treatment.

متن کاملTheoretical Models for Classical Cepheids : II . Period - Luminosity , Period - Color and Period - Luminosity - Color Relations
We present and discuss theoretical predictions concerning the pulsational properties of Classical Cepheids. Masses and luminosities provided by stellar evolutionary calculations are used as input parameters of nonlinear, nonlocal and time–dependent convective pulsating models and accurate determinations of both the blue and red edge of the instability strip are derived, together with theoretica...
متن کاملTheoretical models for classical Cepheids VII. Metallicity effects on the Cepheid distance scale
We use theoretical Period-Luminosity and Period-Luminosity-Color relations in the V I passbands, as based on nonlinear, nonlocal and time-dependent convective pulsating models, to predict the reddening and true distance modulus of distant Cepheids observed with the Hubble Space Telescope. By relying on the pulsating models with metal content Z=0.008, we find that the theoretical predictions agr...

From a theoretical study based on nonlinear, nonlocal and time-dependent convective pulsating models at varying mass and chemical composition, we present the predicted Period-Luminosity, Period-Color, Color-Color and PeriodLuminosity-Color relations in the BV RIJK bands for Classical Cepheids. All the theoretical relations are, in various degrees, metallicity dependent and the comparison with o...
متن کاملNew period - luminosity and period - color relations of classical Cepheids III . Cepheids in SMC
The photometric data for 460 classical, fundamental-mode Cepheids in the SMC with log P > 0.4 measured by Udalski et al. have been analyzed for their period-color (P-C) and period-luminosity (P-L) relations, and for the variation of amplitude across the instability strip in a similar way that was done in Papers I and II of this series. The SMC Cepheids are bluer in (B−V) 0 at a given period tha...
